NEW YORK – By now every Yankees fan has seen the video of Aaron Boone slamming a table after another brutal loss on Saturday.

The manager, typically baseball’s Mr. Rogers, finally lost it. It’s another sign of how fast the Yankees are collapsing, and how helpless Boone is to reverse it.

In five-plus years in front of the YES cameras, Boone has never snapped.

That’s been his calling card – calm consistency his players can count on. But Boone went off on live TV, which tells me two things about his state of mind.

First, he’s desperate. Whether the open-hand smack was spontaneous or calculated, Boone needed to show he’s had enough.

And that message wasn’t just for YES viewers. He knows ownership is watching, up to and including Hal Steinbrenner.

I don’t believe Boone’s job is in jeopardy yet, but he needs to pull the Yankees out of a rapidly deteriorating situation.
