Hours before the UFC 278 weigh-ins, a bout on Saturday’s show was lost.
The women’s flyweight battle between Miranda Maverick and Shanna Young has been postponed due to Shanna Young’s hospitalization, according to an early Friday morning announcement.
Maverick (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) released the following statement to Miranda Maverick Shanna Young Hospitalized, UFC 278 Fight Canceled her social media accounts (through Instagram) on the conflict with Young (8-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC):
Guys, the fight is over. I hope @shanimalshannayoung makes a full and quick recovery from the illness she was suffering from after losing weight. For this camp, we were incredibly prepared, ready, and much better than before. I already gained weight (within a lb to float off by morning).
I’m hoping to continue seeing some excellent fights on Saturday and return to the cage as quickly as I can. Thank you for your support, as well as to my team for believing in me, as well as to everyone who attended the fight, including @pound4poundmuaythai, @eastondenver, @lcasportsmanagement, @jhop4p, and @firemarshall205! Maverick was supposed to retire after his bout at UFC 278, according to a source who talked to MMA Junkie under the condition of anonymity. In the wake of Young’s withdrawal, Miranda Maverick Shanna Young Hospitalized, UFC 278 Fight Canceled she was presented with and accepted a new multi-fight deal, and she will be looking for a new opponent.
On how serious Young’s health is, the UFC has not yet made any remarks.
At Salt Lake City’s Vivint Arena, UFC 278 will take place. Preliminaries on ESPN/ABC and ESPN+ are followed by the main card on pay-per-view.
