In India’s T20I squad for the West Indies series, Samson takes Rahul’s position.

In India’s T20I

India’s team for the five-match T20I series against West Indies, which is set to begin on Friday, has been changed to include Sanju Samson in lieu of the Covid-injured KL Rahul. Samson, a wicket keeper and batsman, was already on tour after being selected for the ODI team as well.

Since the end of the IPL in May 2022, Rahul, India’s first-choice opener in the shortest format, has been sidelined while recuperating from surgery for a sports hernia. He was supposed to return to play for the T20Is against the West Indies, but he became sick and was told to take more time off.

India has a wide range of top-order alternatives and has even started experimenting with opening with Rishabh Pant in addition to skipper Rohit Sharma.

Samson has represented India in 14 T20Is over the course of seven years. He has always been on the outside of the national squad due to his eye-catching strokeplay, but recently has been given a lot more opportunities, especially when some of the veteran players have been rotated out due to fatigue management. Last month, Samson traveled with the squad to Ireland, where he scored his first T20I fifty. With India seeking to play a more aggressive form of cricket coming up to the World Cup in Australia in October, his strike rate of 132.39 over the course of 218 T20s is viewed as a plus.
