Football’s greatest season

The return of club football in the DStv Premiership, Premier League, Serie A, and LaLiga, all in the splendor of HD live on SuperSport, makes August a joyful month.
Mamelodi Sundowns, the defending champions, will begin their campaign on Friday against Cape Town City. All other opening games are scheduled to take place over the course of the weekend.
At the weekend’s Premier League season-opening match between Arsenal and Crystal Palace, expect nonstop action.
For the third consecutive year, Arsenal’s Premier League season opens with a London derby. The season opener of 2021–22 saw them lose 2-0 at Brentford after winning 3-0 at Fulham in 2020–21.
On Wednesday, August 10, the two teams will meet in Helsinki for the first time in 62 years as they compete for the Uefa Super Cup. It will be the ultimate showdown in Europe.

Cape Town City 0 – 2 Sundowns
At the DHL Stadium in the Mother City, defending champions Sundowns defeated Cape Town City 2-0 to begin their league title defense. In the opening match of the season, Masandawana defeated the Citizens thanks to goals from Themba Zwane and Aubrey Modiba. Zwane has now scored in the first league game four times in a row.
Orlando Pirates 1 – 0 Swallows
At the storied Orlando Stadium on Saturday, Pirates defeated Swallows FC 1-0 to win the Soweto Derby. Debutant Bienvenu Eva Nga scored in the opening period. The Pirates’ new Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who previously worked in Finland, had a successful debut as well. This is his first coaching position outside of Europe.
Everton 0 – 1 Chelsea
Chelsea began their 2017 Premier League campaign on Saturday with a 1-0 victory at Everton thanks to a first-half penalty from Italy midfielder Jorginho. 13 corners were thrown at the home goal by Chelsea in the first half, but they appeared to be having trouble as halftime drew near until Jorginho converted from the penalty after Ben Chilwell was fouled to give the visitors the lead.
West Ham 0 – 2 Man City
In his Premier League debut, Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City defeated West Ham 2-0 to begin their title defense. In the sweltering heat of East London, Haaland lived up to the anticipation following his signing from Borussia Dortmund to give the champions a flawless start to the season.

Real Madrid 2 – 0 Eintracht Uefa Super Cup
Real Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup for a record-tying sixth time with goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema. Real Madrid put up a masterful performance to win the UEFA Super Cup for a record-equaling fifth time, and Carlo Ancelotti made history by winning his fourth trophy as a manager. Karim Benzema also established himself as the second-highest goalscorer in Real Madrid history.

Sundowns 4 – 0 Kaizer Chiefs DStv Premiership
At the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns defeated rival powerhouse Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 to win the DStv Premiership in emphatic fashion. After suffering a shock home loss to TS Galaxy the previous week, the Brazilians came out strong and handed the Amakhosi their second loss in the first three games of the new season with goals from Gaston Sirino, Peter Shalulile (two), and newly acquired Abubeker Nasir.

Chelsea v Tottenham Premier League
In a fierce London derby against Chelsea on Sunday, Harry Kane grabbed a 2-2 draw for Tottenham with an equalizer in the 96th minute. After the game’s final whistle, managers Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte were both dismissed for engaging in the second physical incident of the game.

Almeria v Real Madrid LaLiga
Real Madrid, the incumbent LaLiga champion, came from behind to overcome Almeria 2-1 on Sunday thanks to an outstanding free-kick from David Alaba, who had just been brought on as a replacement. Carlo Ancelotti’s club took an early lead against their promoted opponents thanks to a goal from Largie Ramazani, but Lucas Vazquez tied the score shortly after the hour mark. With 15 minutes remaining at Almeria’s Power Horse Stadium, Alaba strode onto the field and curled a free-kick in off the upright after Luka Modric was fouled just outside the box.
