Despite being considered a "integral" Rams player, Kyren Williams did not participate in the preseason finale.

Kyren Williams was eager to make his preseason debut against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday. It was later discovered that Sean McVay did not want to play the rookie running back because he was a crucial member of the roster after he was a late scratch for the exhibition game.

Williams just joined the Rams in practice after missing several games due to a broken foot. Due to Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson’s soft-tissue injuries, the Notre Dame product would get a good amount of practice time with the starting this week.

Williams’ preseason debut would be against the Bengals, the Rams said after he returned to the field. But sometime between then and Saturday, Integral Rams player, Los Angeles decided that keeping the rookie fifth-round pick out of the last preseason game would be best.

It is not shocking to see McVay adopt a cautious stance with Williams because he has consistently done so with guys who are certain to make the squad. The Rams would like Williams to be healthy in case Akers or Henderson are unable to suit up at any point during the season, despite the fact that fans wanted to see the rookie running back in action during preseason.

It’s not shocking to see McVay play it safe with Williams because he has always been conservative with players who are guaranteed to make the roster. The Rams must have seen enough of Williams throughout practice to be satisfied with where he is in his progress during his rookie NFL season.

Fans may have wanted to see the rookie running back in action during the preseason, but the Rams would rather have Williams healthy in case Akers or Henderson can’t play at any point during the season.
